Population是不可数名词，但是只要说的是部分的(不是全体的)人口，大部分人口等时，如果population做主语，谓语动词要用复数。

population的基本意思是人口,还可指居住在某地的全体居民,作主语时谓语动词用单数形式; 在表示人口多少时,用large和small修饰。特指某一地区或某一国家的人口时,则前常加冠词the。
population用作可数名词,表示一个地区的特定人群动物群时,其前常加定冠词the。
population是集合名词,有时可加不定冠词,有时可用复数形式。
